CHARACTER
Name: Katie Smith
Alias: Kaleidoscope (Kale for short)
Age: 12 (will be 13 on Christmas)
Gender: Female
Sexuality: Undecided
Habit/Neurosis: Bibliophilia. This girl loves books - loves, loves, loves them! The subject itself doesn't matter because she always needs one in her hand and she has become an expert at multi-tasking while reading. If she doesn't have a book in her hand (and it has to be a book - computers, comics, newspapers, and magazines don't work for her), she'll get fidgety and restless, unable to concentrate on anything clearly at all until she is concentrating on a new book.

Personality: First off, while this girl is bright, she isn't necessarily genius material. Her knowledge and skills comes from the fact that she actually works hard and tries hard to achieve her goals. This doesn't necessarily make her the best, but it does mean she's She doesn't believe in falling short and will do what it takes to prove herself worthy of what she wants to do. This includes becoming L. The moment you tell this girl that she "can't" do something or that it would be "hard," she will not stop until she achieves this goal, despite the intense frustration and hardships she will go through to achieve it.

Lately, she has tended to be a bit on the withdrawn side, but this is more due to her grief at recently losing her parents and then having no real goal in mind until she arrived at Whammy's House.

She also has a few tendencies towards hypochondrianism, but she usually keeps this to herself (hence it being in the personality section and not the neurosis section) and tends to be overly concerned with her personal hygiene and the cleanliness of the spaces around her due to fear of contracting some disease.

Appearance: She is played by Patricia from Princess Maker 4 and the icons were from images on display at Kit Kat's Princess Maker Corner.

History: Growing up, Katie lived a fairly happy and normal middle class life. Her mother taught at the elementary school Katie attended and her father was a dentist. Both encouraged her throughout her young life to do her best and that she could do anything if she just put enough effort into achieving it. As such, Katie always took the harder road when she could (gifted courses despite always testing below them, higher level books, even starting video games on a harder setting than most people did) and didn't believe it when anyone said she couldn't.

Naturally, she was met with a lot of disappointment, but this didn't mean she wasn't going to stop trying! After hearing it was possible to skip a grade, she spent two years working on that goal to see if she could do it and was pleasantly surprised when she was told she'd bypass the her last year altogether and begin her secondary schooling. Her parents worried that she might not be able to handle it, given how frustrated she tended to get with things she couldn't grasp and suggested she not skip. However she was determined to go through with it, deciding that taking the easy way out was not the way for her.

She wound up being frustrated most of the time because her grades were usually average, causing her to study harder to be the top in the class (her new goal) and ignore making friends with her classmates, though she did make several acquaintances. While she wasn't quite the top of the class, she gained the standard bookworm reputation and all the taunting that came along with it from most children. The only truly rich emotional tie she had with anyone was with her parents, who did nothing but encourage her to achieve her goals.

Then, it happened. Katie herself was allergic to tuna, but her parents decided to have some for their sandwiches one night. They became ill, first her mother complained of headaches and fatigue, then her father. Then they were both throwing up, then they had a fever, and then the next thing Katie knew, her parents were in the hospital and she was being shipped off to a local orphanage with no idea what exactly had happened.

At the orphanage, with no real goal in sight for her, Katie retreated into her books, her only real goal being to gather test scores and wondering what she could do with herself. Without her parents encouraging her and no real benchmark to work towards, she began to withdraw into herself and away from everyone else. Somehow, perhaps because all her reading gave her a wide knowledge base to draw from, she managed to remain at the top of her classes at the orphanage.

This went on for six months when the heads of the orphanage brought her before them and explained to her that a man from an orphanage for gifted children was looking into her records and was interested in taking her on, that it was a goal-oriented program, that she might actually like it as the caregivers and grief counselor were beginning to grow concerned about her withdrawn behavior. They left her to her own devices for a few days to make a decision and she agreed to at least talk to someone from the orphanage before making a final decision.

During this meeting with a representative, she was told of the Greatest Detective in the World, L. Of how he was a genius in the strictest sense of the term, of how he needed a successor, and how the orphanage's purpose was to train his successors, but only the best could become one.

Katie was surprised. She now had a goal again - a challenge. Something to work towards instead of just languishing around idly.

And she was especially surprised when it turned out this amazing orphanage was still in Winchester, where she had grown up.

Quick reference:
St. Mary's Children's Home - her previous orphanage, practically on the other side of Winchester.
Dr. Melanie Shay - Kale's grief counselor at St. Mary's.
